2019 Call to Participate [CLOSED]

Call to Ecosystem Members to Participate

Call to ecosystem members to participate

Please note, the call for participants has been closed

Following the success of the Sharing Cities Summit celebrated in Barcelona in 2018, where around 50 cities agreed to sign the Declaration of Common Principles and Commitments for Sharing Cities (the Declaration of Sharing Cities, for short) as well as create a task force to support cities’ collaboration, it is time for a new encounter. This time it will be taking place at the Smart City Expo World Congress 2019 (SCEWC) with the goal of rebooting the Declaration of Sharing Cities.

From 19 to 21 November 2019, Smart City Expo World Congress 2019 will host the Sharing Cities Action Encounter’s Stand Lab. It will be a chance for the entire sharing cities ecosystem to meet and define the 2020 Action Plan for the Platform Economy and the Collaborative Economy based on the Declaration of Sharing Cities. It will also be an opportunity for this Declaration to reach the around 700 cities and over 21,000 visitors attending the SCEWC.

Several members of the platform economy ecosystem – cities, organizations, researchers and civil society – will gather together once again to work to build a stronger network through various activities. This year not only are more than 50 cities from around the globe expected to come to deal with the issue of the platform economy, but also a wide array of public institutions, such as the European Commission, the Government of Catalonia and Barcelona City Council. This certifies the Sharing Cities Action Encounter 2019 as an opportunity to impact on public policy.

Thanks to a wide range of activities – from projects and exhibitions to Open Forum debates, workshops and hacking sessions dealing with current platform and collaborative economy models – the Sharing Cities Action Stand Lab will act as a hub where visitors and participants can come together to understand the platform and collaborative economies’ impact on cities, the consequences and how this affects citizens’ lives.

The Sharing Cities Action Stand Lab’s various activities will address the following topics:

  • Economic Models and the Future of Labour. New business models to improve regulation and prodemocratic platform models, economic sustainability and the right to work and the city.
  • Inclusion & Gender. Integrating the gender perspective and ensuring inclusion in sharing policies and digital platforms.
  • Data. Negotiation with platforms for data access, building data commons and data regulation.
  • In addition to the three issues previously described, the programme will also shed light on the Ecological Sustainability topic in a transversal way. Circular economy and climate change will be a crosscutting point.
  • Moreover, other topics related to sharing cities, the platform economy and the collaborative economy can be proposed by the participants.

Throughout the three days of the programme, all those participating will contribute to drawing up the 2020 Action Plan for the Platform Economy and the Collaborative Economy, the Sharing Cities Action Stand Lab 2019’s most important outcome. This document will define a set of actions which the community agrees to carry out in 2020 in order to build a stronger sharing cities ecosystem.

Although there will be specific sessions for cities at the Sharing Cities Stand Lab, any city interested will be invited to attend the rest of the programme of activities. We want the Sharing Cities Action Stand Lab to be, if not your favourite spot at the SCEWC, at the very least your second home. If you would like to give a Stand Lab session or receive information about the Sharing Cities Task Force, please email us at cities@sharingcitiesaction.net or visit this section of the website.

Last year the Stand Lab drew a huge international crowd from the sharing cities/platform economy community: we hosted more than 100 key speakers, over 80 initiatives were exhibited and 2 lean workshops given. This year is shaping up to be an even bigger success.

Participate as a Researcher

Participate as a researcher

Research is a key part of the Sharing Cities Action Encounter’s programme. This year its Stand Lab wants to offer researchers and research initiatives a chance to connect and present their research into sharing cities and the platform and collaborative economies. If you would like to take part in the platform and collaborative economy researchers’ meetup, or maybe be involved in another session, like a workshop, roundtable or talk, or simply come and listen, you can register using the following form:

Participate as a researcher

Last year, over 30 researchers specialized in the platform and collaborative economies came together to share their ideas and insights. See how the general programme and the researchers’ meetup went!

Selection Process

Selection process

Please note, the call for participants has been closed. It remained open until 27 September.

Evaluation process and criteria

The selection board will take into account specific indicators such as the legal governance model, type of interaction (P2P, B2C, etc), area of activity (mobility, caring, etc), the social, gender or economic equity impact, which kind of technological and data policy rules the initiative has, and the scope of the project: international, regional or local. An advisory board will be responsible for verifying whether or not applications meet the evaluation criteria.

The selection process is based on the Declaration of the International Collaborative Economy Forum (Procomuns); the Declaration of Common Principles and Commitments for Sharing Cities, launched last November in Barcelona during the Sharing Cities Summit 2018; and the Platform Economy Characterization Framework, the Sharing Star. The selection process will take into account an array of factors and will seek to find a balance between local and international collaborative projects, consolidated global projects and small-scale projects, as well as the ecosystem’s different development areas: companies, civil society and universities. Government agencies will also be present throughout the encounter.

Advisory Board members will be from such initiatives as Dimmons, Ideas for Change, Fem Procomuns, OuiShare, DigitalFems or Liquen DataLab. The Advisory Board will try to include as many of the initiatives as possible while maintaining a democratic balance. Innovation and originality will also be taken into account.

Applicant organizations and initiatives will be notified once the final selection has been made. The selected organizations must commit to the event.
